If you live in the Charlotte, NC area you can meet my daughter Vicki tonight at the opening of this show at the Ciel Gallery. She has 2 mosaic pieces juried into the show.
In 2001 when I went to visit she asked me to bring a lot of neutral color squares to do a colorwash type background for an iron gate applique. We were working from a picture of a gate and entrance to a house. We worked on the layout of the squares together and while I sewed the background she drew the gate on the paper backing of a fusible product which we bonded to black ultrasuede. Then she cut it out and we fused it on. I quilted it and started the binding on my last day there. My son in law said I couldn't leave until the binding was done. He knew Vicki's skill was in designing and not in sewing binding. I just did some loopy quilting in the dark areas and I think I did ditch quilting in the rest of it.
I had made a log cabin quilt in neutrals and blacks that she has on the bed and this wallhanging looks perfect with it.
I remember we took a trip to Mary Jo's Fabrics to fill in a few value ranges. This piece was a lot of fun to make.
I signed both of our names with free motion quilting.
