I sewed the binding all by machine on this quilt. I figured it will either be a baby quilt or lap quilt for someone and therefore will be washed often and get a lot of wear and tear.
On the zig zag I am doing a hand finished binding. I decided it is going to be a wallhanging for my main level studio (yes, I have 2 studios). I got one side hand stitched and about 10" on a second side.
Next on my agenda was sewing the borders onto this queen sized Trip Around the World quilt made with all Kaffe Fassett fabrics. Here is another post on this quilt, Nov. 2007. I cut the borders in April this year and now they are on the quilt top. When I measured it last night to figure out the backing I decided it is too long. I may trim 4" off one of the end borders which will be the top border when it is on a bed. The top measures 96" x 117" right now. I know a lot of sources say a queen size quilt is about 83" x 93" but that wouldn't even cover the sheets and blankets with the thick mattresses today.
I like mine to be somewhere between a coverlet and a bedspread. I don't like dust ruffles so I make my quilts with a 17-18" drop so they end below the bed frame. I hope to get the backing fabric cut and pieced today and loaded on my midarm quilting machine, and maybe even get it quilted. I know that sounds ambitious but the QOV group meets next Tuesday and I have to start working on preparations for that by Sunday afternoon.
